TORONTO, November 16, 2023 (Tennis Canada Press Release)
Following their historic victory in Seville, first-time World Champions Canada have claimed the top spot in the 2023 year-end Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Nations Rankings for the first time, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced Wednesday.
Team Canada presented by Sobeys have climbed five places from their previous position of No. 6 after defeating Italy 2-0 on Sunday, becoming just the eighth nation to hold the No.1 spot since the rankings were introduced in November 2002 – after Slovakia, France, Russia, Italy, Czechia, Australia and Switzerland.
“To have both the men’s and women’s teams sitting at the top of the world rankings simultaneously is an incredible feat and testament to how far we have come as a tennis nation,” said Tennis Canada CEO Michael Downey. “For an individual sport, this is the ultimate team reward – justification of all the hard work put in across our tennis ecosystem over many years. To see Canada with the No.1 ranking by our name is an incredibly proud moment. We can’t wait to receive the Billie Jean King Cup trophy on our shores and look forward to sharing this success with our fans and inspiring even more Canadians to pick up a tennis racquet.”
The Billie Jean King Cup Nations Rankings are published following each competition week and reflect the performance of teams over the previous four seasons, with recent results weighted more heavily. The current rankings cover a five-year period due to the 2020 and 2021 seasons being combined as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
