Coria Begins Title Bid At Challenger Ciudad De Guayaquil

Argentinian tennis players demonstrated their prowess at the XIX Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil Copa Banco Guayaquil on Tuesday at the Anexo Guayaquil Tenis Club.

Top seed Federico Coria, ranked 78th in the world, faced a tough challenge in the first round, requiring three sets to secure victory against South Korean qualifier Gerard Campana Lee. Coria displayed his resilience, winning 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 in a match that lasted two hours.

Reflecting on his performance, Coria expressed his gratitude for the warm reception in Guayaquil and acknowledged the talent of his opponent. He acknowledged the challenging conditions, emphasizing his satisfaction at overcoming both the competition and the intense heat. Coria, a finalist in last year’s tournament, will face compatriot Franco Agamenone in the next round.

No. 8 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli defeated Brazilian Joao Reis Da Silva 6-4, 6-0. The four-time ATP Challenger Tour champion will next play Italian Luciano Darderi.

Another victory for Argentina came through Facundo Diaz Acosta, who arrived in Ecuador shortly after winning the Pan American gold medal in singles in Chile. Despite his recent success, Diaz Acosta showed no signs of fatigue, defeating Bolivian Murkel Dellien 6-3, 6-2 on Court 1.  The 22-year-old tributed his mental strength to his recent achievements, allowing him to maintain focus and adapt to the different climate conditions in Guayaquil. Up next for Diaz Acosta will be his fellow countryman Marco Trungelliti.

Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the 2021 champion in Guayaquil, continued his successful run in the tournament. The No. 5 seed exhibited a strong performance, defeating Argentine Juan Bautista Torres 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 15 minutes. Tabilo will next take on Matheu Pucinelli de Almeida of Brazil.
