Two seeded players were in action on the opening day of the main draw at the XIX Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil Copa Banco Guayaquil held at the Anexo Guayaquil Tenis Club in Ecuador.

Daniel Elahi Galan from Colombia benefited from the retirement of Kilian Feldbusch of Switzerland to reach the second round of the $80,000 clay-court event. Second-seeded Elahi Galan was leading 6,-3, 6-7(4), 5-0 when his opponent was forced to stop playing due to a right calf injury.

“Overall, I was always ahead on the scoreboard. Twice a break up in the second set, I couldn’t hold my serve and convert all the opportunities I had on the return. In the end, he had nothing to lose, and he did very well. I started very loose, then very tense, not doing the things I should have done,” said Elahi Galan, who will next take on the winner of the encounter between Rodrigo Pacheco Menendez of Mexico and Swede Elias Ymer.

No. 8 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli from Argentina needed two sets to defeat Brazilian Joao Reis Da Silva winning 6-4, 6-0. The four-time ATP Challenger Tour champion struck five aces and won 79 per cent of his first-service points to advance in one hour and 11 minutes.

Ugo Carabelli will next play either Dalibor Svrcina of the Czech Republic or Italian Luciano Darderi.
