Kamil Majchrzak has clinched his third ATP Challenger career title. The 24-year-old from Poland won thee 27th edition of the €135,280 Moneta Czech Open in Prostejov. Majchrzak outlasted top seed and defending champion Pablo Andujar of Spain 6-2, 7-6(5) in Sunday’s singles final.
The World No. 107 advanced to the championship match with wins over Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin, Australia’s Marc Polmans and Aleksandar Vukic as well as Czech teenager Jiri Lehecka. In his first meeting with Andujar, Majchrzak saved four of the five break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own seven chances to secure victory in one hour and 55 minutes.

“Pablo is a great player,” Majchrzak said. “Before the match I was a little worried if I could do it. In the first set, however, I was able to change the rhythm of the game, adding something extra. In the second set, however, I started badly, my service suddenly left and I allowed my opponent to return to the match. Pablo gained confidence and a great battle began. Fortunately, I was able to quickly regain the lost service and we played excellent tennis until the last ball, all the games were very tight. I’m really happy for the victory.”
Majchrzak, who lifted the trophies in St. Brieuc and Ostrava last year, has captured his second title in the Czech Republic and took away from Prostejov €18,290 in prize money as well as 125 ATP Ranking points.
“I’m playing really well here,” Majchrzak said. “I played here for the first time ten years ago, when I made into the juniors final. So I have nice memories and I will always be happy to come back. I am glad that this year’s tournament took place at all and that I was able to compete. I had an injury at the beginning of the year and I couldn’t practice. The suspension of the tour was not the worst thing that could have happened to me. I didn’t expect to play so well here.”
Majchrzak, who achieved his career-high ranking of World No. 83 in September last year, will return to the top 100 on Monday.
