LISBON, May 19, 2019

Roberto Carballés Baena and Facundo Bagnis advanced to the title match of the Lisboa Belém Open. Carballés Baena defeated fellow Spaniard Pedro Martínez in Saturday’s semi-finals.

The No. 2 seeded Tenerife native saved five of the six break points he faced, converting five of his own eight chances to seal victory in one hour and 24 minutes.

Later in the day, Bagnis benefited from the retirement of Lorenzo Giustino of Italy. The No. 10 seed from Argentia was leading 6-4, 4-3 when Giustino was forced to stop playing due to a right shoulder injury.

“I felt some pain in my shoulder yesterday. Today it was windy, which made it harder to serve. I did some double faults because of the pain and I thought it would better to give up,” Giustino said.

Carballés Baena, who is seeking his second ATP Challenger title of the season, and Bagnis, who could lift his first trophy in 2019, will meet for the third time. The pair’s head-to-head record is tied at 1-1.

“He is a very good player, who moves the ball well,” Carballés said of Bagnis. “He can play fast but I’m going to fight a lot.”

It was the pair’s second team title of the season following their triumph in Rome last week.
